The story of the BLUE FUGATES of Kentucky who had a genetic condition due to inbreeding called “methemoglobinemia’ . Their Skin Turned Blue From Inbreeding. Their Skin Turned Blue from Inbreeding: Blue Fugates and Methemoglobinemia

In this video, we'll be talking about blue fugates, who had a rare condition caused by inbreeding. It's called methemoglobinemia, a condition caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain. This condition can come from genetics or even environmental or chemically . So if you or anyone you know is blue or turns blue...see and consult with a doctor.

Martin Fugate and Elizabeth Smith[ settled in troublesome creek, ky in 1820. And they both were carriers of the recessive methemoglobinemia (met-H) gene. They did not know before marrying that this could be carried o to their children. They had 7 kids. (4 were blue and 3 weren’t)/. This carried onto their kids and then to the generations. With a very limited local gene pool of 3-4 families in the area, this caused many descendants of the Fugates to also be born with met-H.Methemoglobinemia/

Descendants with the gene continued to live in the areas around Troublesome Creek and Ball Creek into the 20th century til about 1975. A nurse named Ruth Pendergrass and the hematologist Dr. Madison Cawein III, studied the ancestry and found that inbreeding was the cause. He found a report from a Dr. Scott who studied a similar problem with indigenous people in Alaska.

Cawein treated the family with methylene blue, erasing symptoms immediately and reducing the blue coloring of their skin as he looked on.

Methemoglobinemia is a condition where your blood becomes oxygen-poor, and it can lead to a variety of symptoms including blue skin, shortness of breath, and even death if not treated. The blue fugates fortunately did not have any other symptoms other than the blue skin..

Methemoglobinemia can also be caused by exposure to chemicals and it is advisable for anyone with blue skin to see their doctors asap.
