Video Text:
Ever hear the story about the pastor who skipped church so he could play golf. He drove several hours across two state lines, just to make certain he wouldn’t run into a parishioner, then practically tip-toed out to the first hole, still terrified of seeing a member of his church. With a deep breath, he took his first swing and watched the ball sail gloriously through the air, drop onto the green and roll back towards him, down the hill and directly into the cup! A hole in one!

The pastor screamed in delight. Unbelievable! In all his life, he had never before witnessed a hole-in-one shot. His arms shot into the air, his legs danced and he cried out, almost sobbing the words, “Dear God, Thank you…. Thank you! I was so afraid that you were going to punish me for skipping church!”

Suddenly the sky boomed and God responded, “My son, I have punished you.” “How God, how? I just shot a hole-in-one!” the pastor questioned in disbelief. “My son,” God now whispered…. “Who are you going to tell.”

Yes – God’s ways are above our ways! We see the hole-in-one but don’t see beyond it. We experience good times and forget the bad. We also suffer in bad times and forget the good. Either way, our memories and perspectives are finite and small.

In the “hole-in-one” story, the man got an answer right away. But sometimes life is scary, hard and we feel alone, like in Psalm 10 which begins with a cry to God, asking “Lord why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide when I need you the most?” Psalm10:1NLT

As we read through the questions of Psalm 10, we may never find answers to our whys. But we can have peace in the answer toward the end of the Psalm, perhaps not with “why” but with a far bigger answer of “who.” As we see who God is and what he has done for us, we can learn to trust him. The who is so much bigger than the why. God is still alive and very much in charge. His ways…. far beyond ours.

We need to rest in the who – the who of God.

My friends, there are many “Why God” questions that are tough and deserve thoughtful study and prayer. “The Reason for God” by Timothy Keller is one of the best books I’ve ever read as it answers so many difficult why questions. Click the link and let God come into your life even more.
