Why do i get stage fright when public speaking and how can I overcome it?

At the heart of stage fright is the fear of criticism. We are scared to be wrong, afraid of looking stupid, scared we might trip or stumble, afraid we will forget our speech, scared someone will call us out in front of everyone, and deep down are sure there’s a good chance that anything that could go wrong will go wrong. And if any of those things happen, GASP! People will judge us for it!

There is a saying that I love that goes like this “To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, and be nothing.”

That may feel like a viable option to those who suffer from severe stage fright! There won’t be any chance of looking stupid on stage or on a zoom or on social media IF YOU NEVER SHOW UP! And yes I suppose that IS an option, but honestly I think it is the absolute worst possible course of action. If you are watching this video, chances are you either have to give a presentation or you WANT to start presenting and sharing your message with the world. Either way, public speaking has somehow become necessary for you to fulfill your purpose, do your job, or get you where you want to go. Which means NOT SHOWING UP is no longer a reasonable option for you.

Why do we get stage fright? Well, it has something to do with our DNA. Back in caveman times, it was best to be concealed because you never knew when a hungry alpha predator would pass by on its hunt for dinner and you would end up being its main course! The easiest ones to find were the first to get eaten! Back in caveman times, it wasn’t safe to make yourself known! The humans that went out and made noise and were more visible GOT EATEN!

So how do you get to the point where you can recognize stage fright for what it is - a lizard-brain reaction of your amygdala telling you it’s not safe to be seen because pain is always the consequence of being seen?
We are genetically wired to seek shelter and avoid displaying our delicious selves to hungry predators, but we are no longer in danger of being dinner every time we leave our cave!

There are things you can do to counteract that fear enough to allow you to move forward and give that presentation, hit the live button, or walk up to the microphone!

One of my favorite ways to overcome stage fright, which yes, I still get regularly the morning of an event, is to sing my favorite fight song. I choose a song that pumps me up and fills me with good energy. I especially have loved Unstoppable by Red for the last couple of years and sing it along with my playlist on repeat all the way to the venue where I’m speaking. By the time I get there, I truly feel UNSTOPPABLE!

Another thing I do is repeat my personal power statement. It reminds me who I am and what my purpose is, and fills me with courage and determination. I wrote it with divine inspiration a couple years ago, and it still often brings me to tears with gratitude for knowing who I am and why I am on this planet.

The third thing I do is pray. If I am hosting my own event, I get all my staff in a circle and hold hands. I pray for inspiration, for the audience to have a life-changing experience, and for angels to surround and support all of us as we serve the people in our care that day. When I speak at someone else’s event, I pray silently before walking on to stage for the same thing.

Ok, let’s recap. 1. Sing your favorite fight song at the top of your lungs before your presentation. 2. Repeat your personal power statement. 3. Pray for divine support and guidance.

Those are my 3 favorite ways to overcome stage fright so I can get over that lizard-brain fear and get on with making a difference in the world.

I would love to hear what YOU do to overcome stage fright, so please let me know in the comments!
