Every animal is unique in its own way. They all have their own little personalities, some louder than others. Even then, you can usually group an “average” bunch of animals together, but there are some that just really stand out. From a “snowflake gorilla” and a giraffe living against all odds to a fish that looks like it’s a glitch in the matrix, here are 15 rare animals that are one of a kind!

Snowflake the Gorilla

There are hundreds of thousands of gorillas in the world, but only one snowflake. Snowflake was born in 1966 in Equatorial Guinea, and well, he stood out the minute he was born. That’s because gorillas are usually super dark, intimidating animals; at most, they have a hint of silver. But the snowflake was pure white. He was taken out of the wild and spent his entire life in Barcelona Zoo in Barcelona. While he was there, scientists were able to research snowflake’s DNA to figure out why he was the way that he was and found that he carried a rare gene mutation because he was an inbred!

Normally, Gorillas are pretty strict about not keeping things in the family, but somehow, somewhere in the Equatorial Guinea area, a gorilla uncle and niece ended up having a baby while they both carried an Albinism gene. That led to the gene mutating and becoming so dominant in the snowflake that he skipped out on the melanin altogether! Even though snowflake was a rare anomaly, he was one of the most spirited gorillas to ever exist; and lived till he was 37 and ended up passing away because of incurable skin cancer.

Crooked

If you’ve ever looked at a giraffe, you’d know that for them, their necks are basically half of their bodies, and the neck is extremely important too. For most giraffes, that’s the most basic thing about their bodies, but for this one, everything was different. It lives in Okavango Delta in Botswana, but it lives with a totally crooked neck. What’s crazy is that no one really knows if the giraffe was born with the crooked neck or did he break it in a fight and it just never healed right; either way, the crooked-ness of it is so extreme that it’s a miracle that it’s been able to eat and drink throughout its life!

He does have to maneuver his way down to the ground by bending his knees just right. But even with the uncomfortability of it all, the giraffe is able to live a regular life, hanging out with other giraffes, standing tall, and showing off the kink in his neck as if it were a unique feature, not a deformity.
