Potassium is an important electrolyte in our body, which is essential for many functions. It is vital for the conduction of nerve impulses, and for muscle contraction. It also help maintain a regular heartbeat. Moreover, it helps move nutrients in to the cells and waste products out of the cells. So, it seems like potassium has an extremely important role to play within our body.
However, potassium level that is too high, or too low can be dangerous. Therefore, it is important to maintain a healthy level of potassium in our body.
Potassium excretion is primarily done by the kidneys.
So, when the kidney function is impaired, such as in chronic kidney disease, potassium tends to accumulate within blood.
Having a high potassium levels is extremely dangerous, as it can cause arrhythmias, or abnormal heartbeats, and heart attacks, leading to death within a matter of time.
Therefore, potassium control in patients with kidney disease is extremely important.
Some foods that contain high amounts of potassium include the following.
Dried apricots.
Dates.
Spinach.
Beans.
Avocados.
Sweet potatoes and potatoes.
Bananas.
Coconut water.
And tomatoes.
However, if you are a kidney patient, you can eat the following foods without any problem as they are not rich in potassium.
Berries, such as strawberries and blueberries. Apples.
Grapefruit.
Pineapple.
Cherries.
Grapes.
Peaches.
Pears.
Cauliflower.
Broccoli.
Eggplant.
Cabbage.
Asparagus.
White rice.
White pasta and white bread.
