China’s Space Mining Industry Is Prepping For Launch – But What About The US?
A slew of activities amongst China’s private and state-owned aerospace companies this year are a testament to China’s growing ambitions for economic and military domination of space.
Exploring the wide unknown of space could help us find a solution to the resource shortage our world is facing. Our solar system is found to contain nearly endless amounts of metals, minerals, and energy sources, and political and commercial interest in space mining is growing as the idea becomes more feasible and attainable.
In 2009, the movie "Avatar" was released, and the story of going to the planet Pandora to mine sowed the seeds of space mining, which refers to the extraction of raw materials from asteroids and small planets, for countless audiences. Today, it is not an unattainable fantasy out of a sci-fi movie. Instead, mining various resources beyond Earth is rapidly approaching technological and economic viability.

Tiangong Chinese: 天宮 Tiāngōng; lit. 'Palace in the Sky'officially the Tiangong space station (Chinese: 天宫空间站; pinyin: Tiāngōng kōngjiānzhàn), is a space station constructed by China and operated by China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) in low Earth orbit between 340 and 450 km (210 and 280 mi) above the surface. Being China's first long-term space station and the core of the "Third Step" of the China Manned Space Program, it has a mass between 90 and 100 t (200,000 and 220,000 lb), roughly one-fifth the mass of the International Space Station and about the size of the decommissioned Russian Mir space station.
