Ancient DNA Analysis: Breakthrough Technologies 2023

Hey everyone! It's Wade here, your Science Maniatics correspondent for today. Have you ever heard of paleogenetics? It's a fancy way of saying scientists are studying ancient DNA to learn more about our past.
In the past, scientists had a hard time studying ancient teeth and bones because they were often too damaged to analyze. But now, new techniques and methods make it possible to study even tiny traces of DNA found in dirt. This has led to a big boom in studying ancient DNA.

Chinese researchers have claimed that they've been able to use quantum computers to break encryption, which is a big deal because encryption helps keep our information safe from hackers and bad actors. You might be wondering, what is quantum computing? Well, it's a way to process data really fast, but it's also really hard to make and use. In fact, some experts have estimated that it would be years before we could even hope to use quantum computers for tasks like breaking encryption.

So when the Chinese researchers made their announcement, a lot of people were skeptical. Technology skeptics think the announcement is a fake meant to frighten people.

In a "scientific paper" released last month, the researchers claimed to have used a quantum computer with just 10 qubits to factor a number with 48 bits. That's a pretty impressive feat, but many experts are saying that the breakthrough is currently unfeasible. In fact, Andre Konig, the CEO and co-founder of Global Quantum Intelligence, called the announcement "the largest fraud he has seen in roughly 25 years." Konig argues that the paper's claims lack a proof of concept and are just hype-driven spins on already established methodology and approaches.
