Ice fishing is a lot of fun! But you do need some specialized equipment. In this little video I hope to show you what you need to enjoy this wonderful sport!

First, you need a hole in the ice. For this you use an ice auger, its like a big drill and it can drill a six or eight inch hole through ten inches of ice in about a minute. They go through the ice fast!

Next you might want some ice cleats. They slip over your boots. The attached cleats dig into the ice and keep you from slipping while you walk over the ice.

Get a bucket or two. You can put your loose stuff in one, and then use it to hold your live bait. If you have a second, you can put a garbage bag in it and use it as a toilet.

For catching fish you have to have a small rod and reel, or some tip ups. A tip up is a fixture that has a spool of line and sits over the hole in the ice. You put some bait on the hook at the end of the line and lower it into the hole. The fixture has a spring loaded flag that you bend over and set. When a fish hits, the flag pops and you know to get over to it fast to land your fish. You can use several. Its exciting when a couple go off within seconds of each other!

Get a five hundred yard spool of braided line and you can spool five tip ups and your ice fishing rod and still have some left over.

There are two more things that can make your day more comfortable. The first is an ice sled. Its a narrow box that is about four foot long and two foot wide. You fill it with your gear and drag it across the ice by its attached rope. I like this because it makes it so much easier and safer to carry my gear. All your gear is dragged behind you. You don't want to fall while carrying a sharp ice auger. The sled is feet away from you and everything is packed inside. Much safer. And it fits in the back seat of a car!

You might also consider a pop up tent. This tent goes up fast and gives you shelter from cold winds. Nice when you are spending a cold day on the ice.

And that's it! Check out my web site for more information.
