As I hit the slopes for the 14th time on a snowboard at the breathtaking Alyeska Resort, I was filled with a sense of sadness and joy. This was my final day of class at Alaska Pacific University Adaptive Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding Class, and it was marked by a unique opportunity to volunteer at Alaska Challenge. During this course, I had the opportunity to not only learn snowboarding, but I also learned how to ski, adding two new skills to my repertoire. But it was the volunteer work that left a profound impact on me and rekindled a passion I had not felt since my days of skateboarding.

I had always been a fan of action sports, and skateboarding was one of my first loves. I spent countless hours honing my skills and mastering tricks, feeling a sense of fulfillment each time, I landed a difficult maneuver. However, as I grew older, I began to lose touch with that passion. But today, as I hit the slopes and volunteer at Alaska Challenge, I was reminded of the joy and fulfillment that comes with pursuing a new skill and helping others.

Snowboarding at Alyeska Resort was an experience unlike any other. The breathtaking scenery, the rush of adrenaline, and the unique challenges presented by each run made every moment unforgettable. As I weaved my way down the mountain, I was overwhelmed with a sense of accomplishment and excitement, knowing that I was improving with each run. I was also able to apply the skills I learned in class, such as proper form and technique, to my snowboarding, making the experience even more enjoyable.

But it was the volunteer work that left the biggest impression on me. I was given the chance to positively influence several lives, an experience that was incredibly fulfilling. As a veteran of the Army, I was reminded of my days of training and guiding young soldiers, where I was able to help shape the future of our country. Volunteering at Alaska Challenge provided me with a similar sense of purpose and satisfaction, knowing that I made a difference in someone's life.

The work we did at Alaska Challenge involved helping individuals with disabilities experience the thrill of skiing and snowboarding. To see the joy on their faces as they hit the slopes and experience the thrill of the sport was truly heartwarming. I was inspired by their courage and determination, and it was an honor to be a part of such a positive and impactful experience.

This experience left me with a newfound passion for both snowboarding and volunteering. I am eager to continue exploring the sport, both on and off the slopes, and to continue making a positive impact in the lives of others. Additionally, it rekindled a sense of excitement and fulfillment that I had not felt since my days of skateboarding. I am now eager to explore new ways of combining my love for action sports, snowboarding, and volunteering, creating a unique and dynamic experience for all involved.

In conclusion, my time at Alaska Pacific University Adaptive Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding Class – Led By Legendary Instructor Mike “Kappy” Kaplan and at the Alyeska Resort has been an incredible journey of discovery and growth. I have learned new skills, discovered a newfound passion for snowboarding, and had the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of others. I am grateful for the experiences and memories that I have gained, and I cannot wait to continue exploring all that Alaska has to offer. This is just the beginning of a new chapter, and I am eager to see where this path will lead me.
