Valerian Root, also known as Valeriana officinalis, is a perennial herb used for centuries to promote health and well-being. This herb is known for its calming, soothing, and medicinal properties, which can help alleviate many health concerns.

One of the most well-known benefits of Valerian Root is its ability to improve sleep. It is a natural remedy for insomnia and other sleep disorders. Valerian Root works by increasing the levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps to calm the nervous system, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Key Preparations
Tablets - Normally mixed with other herbs, taken for stress or anxiety
TIncture - For anxiety take 20 drops in hot water up to 5 times a day
Powder - Can be taken in capsules for insomnia. Take 1 - 2 doses of 500 mg at night
Decoction - Take 1 - 5 tbsp as a sedative at night.

Plant in the Fall and Spring

Plant ¼ inch deep 12 to 18 inches apart
Can be direct sown or started indoors
Harvesting
It will not be ready to harvest until year 2, trim the stems near the base of the plant, and gently remove the dirt surrounding the roots, pull up gently using a spade or garden fork.

Warnings: This may not be a safe herb if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Side effects can include headache, dizziness, stomach problems (if you take a lot it can cause diarrhea). Though the majority of people feel a more sedative effect, some people may become restless at night.
