Overview of the federal circuit [federal courts in the United States]

In this video, Attorney Steve explains the federal court system in the United States. To try to break this down for you as easily as possible, in the U.S., we have both STATE COURTS (all states have their own state court system). We have a FEDERAL CIRCUIT COURT SYSTEM (which handles certain federal cases, particularly those cases that involve lawsuits between citizens of two different states - called "diversity jurisdiction cases" or a "federal question" case, which deals with questions and legal issues involving federal laws, treaties, and statutes (for example Federal Copyright Infringement laws, or trademark lawsuits).

Now, in the federal circuit system (similar to state courts), you will have trial courts (called "District Courts"), and you will have Courts of Appeal that hear the appeals from the District Courts. The district courts can hear civil and criminal cases, and all bankruptcy cases are filed in federal bankruptcy courts (never in state court).

The top court in the federal court system is, of course, the United States Supreme Court in Washington D.C. Note. However, each state also has its own State Supreme Court.

So, for example, you have a California state court (ex., a municipal court in Los Angeles or Marin County), and you have a federal district court in San Francisco and the 9th circuit court of appeals with an office in San Francisco:

So this is the basic setup. You have the co-existence of both State and Federal Courts, each with its own appeals courts, and the D.C. Court and Federal Judicial Circuit (which has nationwide jurisdiction). This creates a total of 94 judicial districts and 13 circuits.

Federal Circuit Courts are located all over the United States, from San Francisco to Los Angeles, New York, and Texas. These courts help handle cases that involve laws and rules of the US government and federal agecies, as well as appeals cases that made it to an earlier court decision. The Federal Circuit Court system is integral to the success of our legal system because without this layer of protection many injustices could be made without a way to right them. With specialized courts understanding the distinct laws for many different federal entities, citizens can rest assured that justice will be brought in the most informed and fair manner.

Hope this has been helpful. If you like it, give me a shout!! Thank you.
