Coconut crabs are the largest land crabs in the world, they can reach one meter and weigh up to 5 Kg, even having a Guinness World Record to prove it. The Coconut Crabs are second only in size to the giant spider crab which can measure 4 meters due to its long legs and weigh over 20 kg, but unlike the Coconut Crabs which are terrestrial, the giant spider crab is found in deep ocean waters pacific, being abundant in Japanese deep waters, it is also very appreciated in Japanese cuisine. Coconut crabs have a life expectancy of 60 years, and reach sexual maturity around 5 years of age. They mate between May to September and the females release their eggs into the water. These invertebrates are nocturnal most of the time, but they can be seen active during the day in regions where there are no humans. Just as their name implies, crabs are known to break open green coconuts to feast on the white flesh inside. Their walking legs are curved and claw-like, which helps crabs climb palms and other trees. However coconuts are not all they eat, these crabs can also eat fallen fruits, nuts, seeds and even small animals like mice and birds. Coconut crabs have no natural predators, but humans have driven them to local extinction in many areas as they are hunted for consumption. In addition, some specimens have also been registered in the pet trade, which may further accelerate their demise.
