Swamp Diving In Buford Springs Cavern, Florida
Buford Sink is hidden inside Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge in Hernando County, FL and is the second largest Cavern in Florida. Although very difficult to reach the site, it’s well work the effort to dive what many consider the most beautiful cavern in the state. Inconspicuous from the surface, Buford's Cavern zone turns into an enormous ballroom that regularly has over 100 ft of visibility.
After finding the location you will have to walk about half a mile from the nearest dirt road, then about a 150 yard difficult climb through the mud swamp with all your gear on. At times, knee deep to waist deep mud to work through. Very easy to get lost in the swamp (we learned the hard way on a previous attempt) here so bring a diver who knows its location and it’s a good idea to use trail marker ribbons.
