Lab grown diamonds are nearly identical to mined diamonds unless viewed with sophisticated equipment. The technology to produce lab diamonds has improved resulting in increased production and decreased prices. These diamonds can even be grown to specific shapes.
More than a third of diamond engagement rings were lab created last year in the US. Globally, lab diamonds are 13.6% of diamonds sold. They are especially popular with young people. 37% of people between the ages of 18 and 34 will purchase a lab grown diamond. While some of these consumers are socially and environmentally conscious, price is still an important factor. ! 1 carat lab diamond retails for about $1,430 versus $5,635 for a mined diamond. The average size for a lab diamond in 1.8 carats versus 1.5 for a mined diamond.
To make diamonds, a diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber with a carbon containing gas. The carbon atoms bond to the seed and build diamond crystals. It takes 600 hours to grow one carat.
Mining companies tried to say these were not real diamonds until the FTC said they are diamonds. Now they are claiming that the value of the lab diamonds will lose value as supply increases. They are also attacking the environmental claims of lab diamonds.
