Nordstrom has announced its decision to close both of its Downtown San Francisco stores, including one in the Westfield Mall, after declining to renew its lease. The company's chief stores officer cited difficult market conditions and a reduction in customer foot traffic as the main reasons behind the move. The closures will result in approximately 357,500 square feet of retail space being vacated, including a Nordstrom Rack location. The Westfield Mall's owner, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, expressed concerns about the deteriorating situation in Downtown San Francisco and the departure of businesses from the area due to unsafe conditions and rampant criminal activity. Nordstrom plans to expand its presence in California by opening five new Nordstrom Rack stores in various cities across the state, including San Mateo. The announcement follows the closure of several other retailers in the area since 2020.
