Why are foreign workers going to Romania?
Romania was a former soviet country that experienced widespread economic and political turmoil in the 1990s after the communist regime there was overthrown in December 1989. There was high inflation, poverty, and low wages as the economy transitioned from a highly centralized command economy to more democratic, western , market economy. Romania struggled to attracted foreign investment and modernize its industrial sector, and many companies went bankrupt. There were a series of short lived governments, as well as persistent corruption, in addition to organized crime.
These factors led people to leave Romania in search of better opportunities. The population shrunk from 23.2 million people in 1990 to 19 million people today. However, things are changing for the better in Romania. The growth rate last year was 4.7%. Businesses are desperate for workers, especially the hospitality and construction sectors. The Romanian bureaucracy is overwhelmed by the demand for foreign workers. There is such a need for foreign workers, that some businesses have given up trying to attract them. The construction sector alone requires an additional 100,000 new workers by the end of 2024 partly due to the EU’s post pandemic reconstruction fund, of which Romania will receive almost 27 billion euros. 17 billion euros will go towards construction alone.
