IAF Promo 16: The Trumpets of War Resound Again in Syria

a portrait of some very unhappy days in Syria, somewhat preceded by Trump’s announcement of his withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement. The question is- is this conflict just a prelude to a larger one? Israel has already claimed, following its May 10th attack on military bases controlled by Iran, that it has inflicted massive damage on the military infrastructure of Iran in Syria.

Speculations about the role of an oil company and a very large deposit of oil, located in the Golem Heights, an area occupied by Israel, has stimulated discussion of the value of that oil in itself but also in a pipeline extending through Syria through the Golan Heights? Could this be an additional factor, in addition to other proposed pipelines, for utilizing military force to overtake Syria, a concept not unrelated to Trump’s pre-election comments on his strategy for Syria.

Despite the extraordinary disapproval of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s portrait of Iran’s violation of the agreement, Trump immediately stated his approval of Netanyahu’s statements, followed soon after by his withdrawal from the agreement. About an hour later, Israel again attacked Iranian military posts. The reality is that there were many attacks on these military assets long before the withdrawal and recent Israeli attacks preceding the withdrawal. The Israeli rationale that led to its recent massive resort stated that the rockets were fired by Iranian forces but some Syrian officials are said to have stated that the rockets were fired by Syrian forces. Nothing is very clear in all these recent scenarios, including the chemical attacks that spurred the United States to attack Syria recently on two separate occasions.

The Israeli attitude towards military action in this instance, but also others, is summed up in his statement. “"The international community should prevent the establishment of the Iranian Quds Force in Syria. We must untie to cut off the arms of this expanding evil, there and everywhere," the prime minister said. "I repeat: Whoever harms us – we will harm him many times over, and whoever prepares to harm us – we will act to harm him first. That's what we did and we will continue to do so."

Does the promise of pre-emptive strikes, which can easily be triggered by false or misleading information, by accident over design, and subsequent retaliatory overkill really provide any kind of promise of peaceful reconciliation?
