In the first of a new series for this channel, I speak to newly elected councillor Nigel Jacklin about his motivation and ambition. What makes a good local politician? Find out this and more tonight at 7pm GMT

The Democratic Network was set up in January 2021. We help people get involved in local elections and undertake research.

If you want to get involved in the May 2023 local elections please take part in our annual Network Survey. Let us know what matters to you. You can opt in to receive more information about candidates and the issues that matter to people. Together we can make a difference.

We are also interested in your views on policing in advance of the May 2024 Police and Crime Commissioner elections. The survey takes around 7 minutes to complete. To take part please click here and help us make a difference.

Our first research project concerned censorship, free speech and electronic payments. The decision to undertake this survey was prompted by PayPal’s decision to close a number of organisations’ accounts. We launched the survey after this issue was raised in parliament by Danny Kruger MP on 22 September. The Free Speech Union helped us with the survey; they were one of the organisations whose accounts had been closed. Our report, published in September 2022, is here.
