Besides the enormous time, cost, security and testing needed to move Gold and assure it hasn't been tampered with, there is an plethora of Gold in the oceans that science is close to filtering out and mining. Space mining is less than 100 years away and we already know of asteroids that pass by earth that contain enough Gold to make every man, woman and child billionaires (in today's prices).

There have also been recent enormous discoveries of Gold in the Congo and Uganda that effectively double the known supply of Gold. Each year the supply of mined Gold increases by roughly 2%.

Gold-backed derivatives have kept the price of Gold artificially low for decades and will continue to do so. Because Gold is so difficult to spend, transport, divide, counterfeit and gauge purity, paper Gold (derivatives aka IOU's) have greatly replaced physical Gold. The problem with that is there are more paper IOU's than there is Gold to back them and it's just another form of fiat. This is why if you try to buy physical Gold the price is much higher than the spot price. The Gold market is rigged.

Gold bugs who drool at the prospect of a Gold-backed currency would be wise to remember history and understand that if that ever happens again, there is a very real possibility that the Government will seize your Gold to back it.

The value of Gold is greatly based on its scarcity and the cost it takes to mine it. Remove those two from the equation and it's just another metal.

Gold is Centralized and Local. Bitcoin is Decentralized and Global.
The world is moving faster and faster into the digital age.
Gold may continue to be a store of value for decades to come, but it will never again become a currency.
