Let’s compare different types of chicken feed options and how much they cost!
We’re going to compare organic layer feed, organic scratch grains, and homemade feed (also organic) to see which one is more cost effective.
Organic layer feeds costs vary from $28-$38 for a 40 lb. bag, depending on the brand. Quality varies among brands as well so keep that in mind.
Organic scratch grains by Cluck and Co. cost about $20 for a 25 lb. bag and can be used in place of layer feed. $.80/lb.
Our homemade feed definitely varies in price depending on which ingredients are used, but for a basic feed with just a few organic ingredients, the cost is approximately $28 for 25 lbs. of feed. $1.12/lb.
Comparing the costs per pound we found organic layer feeds were $.70-$.95/lb., organic scratch grains were $.80/lb., and the homemade feed was $1.12/lb. Store-bought feeds are definitely the cheapest option, but to us knowing where our ingredients are being sourced is priceless.
