Was relocating Bud Light marketing to Manhattan part of the problem?

The Manhattan marketing office of Budweiser is a long way from St. Louis, Missouri where the beer has been brewed since the 1850s. In 2015, sales and marketing functions were moved to New York. I would argue that these offices should be in Saint Louis, or at least in the Midwest. The executives in New York City are out of touch with drinkers of Bud Light. Anheuser Busch also has marketers in Austin, Miami, and Los Angeles. Again, I would argue these cities are not aligned with the average Bud Light drinker. A marketing executive with a $1 million dollar plus house in Austin or Miami is not going to understand rural life where the dollar general is the only close place to buy groceries, or even living in a neighborhood in the city where your car gets broken into while you sleep.
Alissa Heinersheid would be the first woman to run Bud Light’s marketing. She would bring down a culture war storm when she trust AB InBev into the middle of a divisive political issue. For two weeks the brand stayed silent, then released a statement about bringing people together. This led to criticism from both sides of the issue about the lengthy wait to respond, and not taking a stand either way.
By the first week of May, Bud Light sales volume was down 28% versus the prior year.
