Sweden’s gun-homicide rate is 2.5 times the European average. 62 people were shot and killed in Sweden in 2022 versus 45 in 2021. Although this is one sixth the US homicide rate, as far as Europe in concerned, this is extraordinary. The gun-homicide rate of Stockholm, Sweden is 30 times higher per capita than London.
A violent wave of gang violence has turned the once peaceful Sweden into the gun-homicide center of Europe.
There is a drug turf war raging driven in part by an influx of guns, marginalized migrant youths, and personal vendettas. Because most of the violence involves migrants, this has led to right wing politicians taking advantage of the situation to tighten migration policies and increase criminal penalties. 75% to 80% of shootings deaths remain unsolved.
The violence is escalating to hand grenades and bombings of buildings.
Sweden’s most notorious gang leader is the Kurdish Fox, a 36 year old named Rawa Majid. He is an ambitious man that is running his Swedish drug operation from Turkey, where he is beyond the reach of authorities because extradition requests are declined. There has been a feud between Sweden and Turkey involving the former’s bid to join NATO and sheltering Kurdish militants.
Swedish police infiltrated an encrypted phone network in 2020 and hundreds of arrests were made, but this sparked off a turf war for the vacated gang territory.
