Congress and the President JUST approved a massive stimulus package including benefits for independent contractors, gig workers, and other self-employed individuals - even if you don’t have any employees. The unemployment benefit now applies to Uber drivers, Lyft drivers, Realtors, freelancers, independent contractors, and other 1099 recipients. In this bill, you’re allowed to self-certify that you’ve been affected by the outbreak and are therefore eligible to receive unemployment insurance.

The stimulus unemployment benefit for independent contractors and gig-economy workers means you can receive $600 per week for up to 39 weeks (and potentially going backwards to January 27th, 2020) ON TOP OF your State unemployment benefits. For example, in the State of Florida you could receive up to $875 per week in unemployment benefits.

Now in order to self-certify, you can’t be receiving sick pay, unemployment insurance as an employee, and you can’t still be able to work from home full time. However, there may be a way for you still get unemployment insurance IF you work from home IF you’re “partially unemployed.” This is an opportunity to apply even if your work or income has partially been reduced due to the outbreak.
