OSTRICH FERN: AKA Fiddlehead Fern, perfect for your shade or water garden
QUICK OVERVIEW OF THE OSTRICH FERN (FIDDLEHEAD FERN)
The Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) is a splendid plant ideal for USDA zones 3-7. It thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, fertile, well-draining soil, thus an excellent choice for shade or water gardens.
This perennial fern grows in a vase-like clump reaching up to 6 feet in height. Its fronds are elegantly feathered, reminiscent of an ostrich's plume, lending a lush, green texture. The distinctive, brown, fertile fronds stand erect in the center, providing winter interest.
Ostrich Ferns are perfect for creating a natural woodland feel or a tranquil water-side setting. They are hardy, easy to grow, and provide a brilliant backdrop to other shade-loving plants. Plus, their fiddleheads are a spring delicacy!
