Watch: Dutch Bark EUROPA tall ship overturned during maintenance
South Africa - Cape Town - 22 May 2023 - The 112-year-old Dutch Bark EUROPA tall ship overturned during maintenance work at the V&A Waterfront on Saturday.
A sailor from the island-hopping tall ship, Bark EUROPA, is in hospital after being injured when the ship fell over while being placed back into the water from a dry dock. Such an accident has never happened before with Bark EUROPA. The situation is currently under investigation to analyse what is needed to get Bark EUROPA sailing again.
The ship was built in 1911 to serve as a lightship on the river Elbe in Germany and was brought to the Netherlands in 1986 to be completely rebuilt as a barque (three-mast rigged ship). Since 1994 it was fully restored and has been roaming the seas of the world.
The Bark EUROPA is a special purpose sail training ship and sails with a voyage crew and permanent crew to remote islands and cities all over the world, for all who want to experience the adventure of sailing over the oceans on a tall ship – regardless of sailing experience.
