➡️ What are Adventitious Lung Sounds?
Adventitious is a word that essentially means "abnormal." So basically, these are abnormal breath sounds that occur over the lungs and airways during auscultation. Adventitious breath sounds are commonly associated with a wide array of heart and lung conditions. The type, duration, location, and intensity of each adventitious breath sound can help medical professionals diagnose and treat certain medical conditions. This is why knowing the differences between each type of abnormal breath sound is so important for Respiratory Therapists and medical professionals.
➡️ Types of Adventitious Lung Sounds:
▪ Crackles
▪ Wheezes
▪ Rhonchi
▪ Stridor
▪ Diminished breath sounds
▪ Pleural friction rub
We've covered each of these abnormal breath sounds in more detail in other videos on our channel, so definitely be sure to subscribe and check those out to dive even deeper.
➡️ Causes of Adventitious Breath Sounds:
▪ Crackles – caused by air moving through secretions in the small or middle airways.
▪ Wheezes – caused by air moving through a narrowed or constricted airway.
▪ Rhonchi – is caused by air moving through secretions in the larger airways.
▪ Stridor – occurs when an upper airway obstruction is present.
▪ Diminished – present when there is decreased air movement in the lungs.
▪ Pleural Friction Rub – is heard when inflamed pleura rub together due to decreased levels of fluid in the pleural space.
Keep in mind that there are other causes of abnormal breath sounds. These are just a few of the common examples that you should be familiar with.
