In the past, Nonthaburi was filled with many small canals for people to transport their wares easily through thee community by water. In the present day, almost all of the canals have been transformed into roads with only few remaining canals. One of the canals that still history is the Wang Takien canal, Bang Khu Wieng Sub-District, Bang Kruai District.

Wat Takien Floating Market was opened on May 2nd, 2009 by Luang Poo Yam (Venerable Grandfather Yam). He performed an opening ceremony and sprinkle the holy water onto the sellers that operate their boats at the market. The idea is to recover the past generations' way of life for newer generations to experience. Also, he wants to use the canal area for the villagers to earn profit without any expenses. The purpose is reward the villagers for their gratitude, the reason this temple is still here is because the villagers' regularly make merits and donate to the temple.

Inside the floating market, there are various items available for purchasing on the shore, such as vegetables, fruits, barbequed coconut, Look Choob, Thai desserts, etc. You can also purchase items from the boats that tie off at the pier. Some of the items for sale include seasonal fruits, pot-stewed duck, boat noodles, and herbal drinks. After sampling the food take in the scenery of the local community. They say boat trips offer sightseeing along the Bang Khu Wieng and Bang Rao Nok canals but I didn’t see it being offered. It would be a great way to experience the people's way of life along the canal that still has ancient Thai-style houses.

The market is much quieter than the main tourist ones like Damnoen Saduk or Amphawa to the west of Bangkok. It’s much smaller also but has more of a local feel. It’s just on the outskirts of Bangkok in Nonthanaburi. It’s worth a visit if you have time and want to stay closer to the city.
