Today I am heading down from key largo on a 1-2 hour drive to summerland key. This is where i'll meet with my buddy Lee and Mark. I've known Lee most of my life growing up in Florida. A few years ago we used to live together near Key West and did some commercial bullynetting together. But today the goal is to catch some snowy grouper deep dropping. I am bringing my daiwa tanacom 1000 electric reel to see what sort of fish we can catch fishing today.
A small spoiler alert: We catch some great fish and have a open fire catch and cook near the end of this video. It tasted amazing! There is nothing better than cooking your fish the same day you catch it.

South Florida has some amazing fishing and today we will be running off summerland key. Our first stop is in about 90ft deep at a wreck where we load up on bait. We catch lots of blue runners and bonita. The perfect baits for deep dropping. We will cut up these baits to use for the deep drop. When deep drop fishing you can never have enough bait! You never know how many drops you will be doing!

We run several miles offshore and finally get to the grounds. We drop some cut bonita. We run into a few flukes but it's not long before we catch the first tile fish while deep drop fishing. I love tilefish.

This specific tilefish is also known as the gray tilefish. Later in the video this is the one that we catch and cook. The electric reel had no problem bringing the fish up to the top. We also catch a Rosie and another tilefish.

Then we move spots to another location and it wasn't long before my deep drop rig got caught on the bottom and broke the line. There goes $50! So we head back to the other spot where we caught the tilefish.
While running to the old spot we see lots of tuna jumping around. So we start to troll a feathered jig and before we know it we land a skipjack tuna. We circle around and cast back out and catch another tuna.

We get back to our old deep drop spot and drop down some cut tuna. At this point we had grouper on our minds. That's all we wanted! And sure enough we get ourselves a nice snowy grouper!

Florida was setting its sun and it was time to run back to summerland key. When we got back to the keys we wrapped the tilefish in some banana leaves and cooked it on an open fire in the grill. The tile fish tasted amazing and was cooked perfect.

The grouper will be saved for another day. The sad part about this video is my friend Lee's house that you saw was almost completely destroyed by hurricane Irma. His walls had a waterline 3 feet off the ground. Everything was ruined, but no worries. We grew up in Florida and a hurricane can't scare us. We will rebuild and get back to fishing before you know it!
