Rhodes & Corfu show we must stop ignoring the climate emergency.

As the islands of Rhodes and Corfu burn, with holiday makers and residents evacuating, green policy is being abandoned here.
Right, so the sight of British holiday makers fleeing Rhodes and Corfu amidst scorching mid 40’s temperatures literally catching the islands on fire, some in small boats no less, I couldn’t help but note the twisted irony that Brits fleeing in small boats is called a humanitarian disaster by our rancid right wing press, but people turning up on our shores having fled goodness knows what themselves gets called a disaster that is anything but humanitarian by the same news sources, well, it’s a good job locals on those islands don’t treat us the way we treat others, but similarities to the so-called migrant crisis aside, what is going on in the Med right now should be a massive slap in the face to all of our politicians here, that rowing back on Green policy isn’t the way to go. The climate crisis is unfolding before our eyes and it is affecting us here too. What we’re seeing on those Greek islands right now is obvious and dramatic and makes for compelling news reporting, but the bigger issue should be our politicians deciding addressing this, the biggest political issue of our time, isn’t actually politically expedient and isn’t a vote winner. The local elections saw ULEZ get blamed by Labour as a glaring example of green policy getting the blame. It’s not news really that we need to change our vehicles, move away from fossil fuel combustion engines, but the policy itself in how it is being rolled out, the support for people to adapt not there, the funding not there from central government as Sadiq Khan moves ahead regardless has poisoned the idea in the minds of many to the point that it has got the blame for labour’s loss. The policy is the right one, how politicians have handled it though has been with utter incompetence, with Labour’s alleged leader Keir Starmer swinging from supporting the policy, saying Khan had no choice but to roll it out. Back in 2019 Starmer launched a clean air plan at Camden Council. He said at the time ‘air quality, climate change is the issue of our time and as the Extinction Rebellion protest showed us this week, the next generation are not going to forgive us if we don’t take action.’ That clean air plan stated ‘There are good signs ahead. Large scale policy interventions such as the Mayor of London’s ULEZ will help us make a big inroad into air pollution.’ Now of course, he’s rowed back on ULEZ completely, urging Khan to reflect on it, always needs someone else to blame. But he’s not in power, at least not yet, it’s the Tories we’re lumbered with, certainly no better than Starmer but they too are blaming Green policy for losing votes.
