What Does This Tomcat Really Want From His New Family?

If you are one of those people who have caught themselves talking to your or any chance feral cat, please do not worry about your mental health. As it turns out, cats do indeed talk to us and it would be highly impolite if we did not respond. Add to this the fact that cats do not even really meow in order to communicate with each other, which makes this finding even more awkward.

A series of experiments were conducted on humans and cats in order to discover how they communicate with each other and concluded that people better interpreted the meows from cats they lived in comparison to cats they did not know. Scroll to the top of the page to a video that shows a real-life example of this conclusion.

After rescuing this cat from the side of the road, the foster family noticed some unusual behavior with the adopted adult tomcat. Despite them keeping plenty of food in their garage for him, the tomcat still comes to the door “to talk”. They made sure the cat was not hungry and would not even touch the treats they leave for him. They also tried to give him some tenderness that he only occasionally accepts. The family is left perplexed about what this cat really wants.

The cat meows mainly to attract attention from humans and they can be pretty chatty when they want something. The meow is something felines have learned to do when training, i.e. interacting with people and this cat’s meow means the tomcat in front of the window is training his new owners to eventually…let him in.
