How Greed Leads to Suffering

Greed is defined as an excessive desire for more than what one needs or deserves. It is considered one of the seven deadly sins in Christian tradition.
While ambition and working towards goals are good things, unchecked greed can lead to negative consequences personally and societally.

Greed goes against contentment and simplicity
Being greedy means always wanting more possessions, money, status etc. This prevents contentment with what one already has.
Greed encourages materialism rather than simplicity and appreciation for experiences/relationships.
Greed can lead to unethical behavior
Unethical actions like lying, stealing, and exploiting others may arise from greed. For example, greed in the finance sector led to the 2008 recession.
Greed makes people prioritize their own gain over doing the right thing. They become self-centered and ignore ethical considerations.
Greed creates a vicious cycle of temporary satisfaction followed by more wanting
When we acquire more due to greed, it provides a temporary dopamine hit. But the satisfaction quickly fades, leaving us craving more.
This endless cycle of desiring-acquiring-then desiring again is mentally exhausting and makes us unhappy.
Greed harms relationships with others
Relationships may be viewed transactionally - as means to an end for personal gain. This damages real intimacy and connection.
Greed can make people selfish, competitive and dismissive of others' needs. They become isolated and lonely.
