Bareback rider Trenten Montero, who qualified for the 2019 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, passed away on Aug. 30, due to injuries he suffered during a ride on Aug. 10 at the Owyhee County Rodeo in Homedale, Idaho. He was 31.
Following Montero's 79-point ride on Macza Pro Rodeo's Half Crow in Homedale, the horse rolled on top of him, resulting in multiple serious injuries.
Montero was hospitalized at Saint Alphonsus Trauma Center in Boise, Idaho. He was 24th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $58,300.
Montero and his wife, Maria, have an infant son, Noah, who was born July 26. They were living in Jerome, Idaho.
"Trenten was the toughest human being I've been around my whole life," said lifelong friend Joe Harper, a PRCA saddle bronc rider. "We traveled together to all the rodeos. He had big faith and a big heart for everybody. If you called and asked him for anything, he was always the first guy there, even if it meant driving 12 hours across the country to come help you. He had a way of making a guy laugh when you didn't want to. He was a real goofball, but one we all loved dearly.
"He didn't just go through the motions and act like your friend, he really invested into you. He wanted to make life good for the people around him. He also was so dang proud of his son."
Harper also talked about Montero's ability in the rodeo arena.
"Trenten came by it (rodeoing) a little bit, but a lot of it was just hard work and putting in a lot of time," Harper said. "He busted his a** to get to the (NFR). He was talented in a lot of things. He rode bulls a little bit and broncs, but bareback riding won out on the others."
Montero, who grew up in Winnemucca, Nev., bought his PRCA card in 2011. He qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo once – in 2019. That year, he finished 10th in the world standings with $170,296. He earned $89,538 at the NFR, highlighted by winning Round 2 with a 90.5-point ride on Sankey Pro Rodeo & Phenom Genetics' Prairie Rose. His ride broke the Round 2 Wrangler NFR record of 89.5 points, set by Cimarron Gerke in 2004.
"It is a huge honor to be able to get on a horse like that and being able to get by him was great," Montero told the ProRodeo Sports News after the ride. "I thought I was going to be on the ground more than once during that ride and I feel like I definitely worked hard for it, and I'm humbled to be part of that legacy."
Tom Glause, CEO of the PRCA, offered his condolences to the Montero family.
"Trenten was a talented bareback rider and an exceptional young man," Glause said. "His loss is felt deeply by all who knew him and admired his passion for rodeo and his love for his wife Maria and their infant son Noah, to whom we extend our sincerest sympathies as they grieve the loss of this fine cowboy."
