New data shows a possible alarming trend when it comes to cannabis use and traffic incidents. A joint study from Ottawa researchers suggests that since cannabis became legal, more people are ending up in hospital emergency departments.
"Since 2010, there has been a very, very large increase in cannabis involvement and traffic injury visits in Ontario. And if you actually look at how that changes year to year going into legalization, this is increasing. This is a growing problem over time," said Dr. Daniel Myran, lead author of the study.
Data shows that after cannabis became legal, there was a 94 per cent increase in the number of emergency department visits for traffic injuries where cannabis was involved. When COVID-19 happened, there was an even larger jump of 223 per cent when compared to the pre-legalization period.
