Taika Waititi's Next Film Is Repeating a Weird Armie Hammer Recast Trend

Initially, Armie Hammer was cast to have a role in Next Goal Wins . However, Hammer's growing problems surrounding some truly disturbing text messages and allegations have sidelined his career. Once a fast-rising star, Hammer is now persona non gratafor the industry. In the interest of fairness, it should be noted that Hammer checked himself into rehab in 2021 for substance and alcohol abuse, as well as sex-related issues. The Los Angeles district attorney's office also dropped the case against Hammer for sexual assault. But Hammer's erratic and disruptive behavior and admitted transgressions were enough for his agency, WME, to drop him and for him to be kicked out of several future projects. One of them was Next Goal Wins, but it set the stage for a fun coincidental quirk.
n December 2021 it was announced that Will Arnett would replace Armie Hammer in the role of Alex Magnussen in the Next Goal Gets cast. The recast was due to Hammer's legal and personal issues, but also because when the film needed to be reworked, it was not available (largely because of these ongoing problems). Will Arnett ended up taking on the role and a few changes happened when he did.
The character Alex Magnussen was originally reported to be an executive at the American Samoa Football Federation. The role was expanded after Arnett joined the cast, likely due to Arnett's vast comedic talent. Magnussen is now one of Rongen's superiors who demotes the coach to coach the American Samoa national team after their poor winning record. Strangely, it's not the first role Arnett has landed that was originally coveted by Hammer.
