F. Scott Fitzgerald in Asheville
The Great Gatsby author F. Scott Fitzgerald drove south in 1935 after dropping his wife Zelda off in Baltimore for mental health treatment. He kept driving until he hit Asheville, North Carolina, the city in the land of the sky. Staying in the same fourth floor suite in Grove Park Inn, Fitzgerald was remembered as courteous, gentlemanly but drinking up to thirty bottles of beer a day throughout the year. He romanced a married woman, giving her the name "Rosemary" from his latest novel Tender is the Night and wrote articles about his breakdown. Learn more about Fitzgerald's stay in Asheville in this video.
