Sea cucumbers are marine animals with a leathery skin and an elongated body containing a single, branched gonad.

They are part of the echinoderm group, which also includes starfish and sea urchins.

There are about 1,717 known holothurian species worldwide, with the greatest number being in the Asia-Pacific region.

Sea cucumbers are found in all oceans, mostly in shallow water but sometimes at depths of many thousands of meters. They are best represented in the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific.

The edible sea cucumber is a scavenger that crawls along soft bottoms near coral reefs and seagrass beds ingesting sand and mud in its path, separating out and digesting any plant or animal matter and passing the sand, leaving a trail of clean sand behind.
