What are some of the causes of Peripheral Neuropathy besides diabetes?
Many people are under the impression that you have to be diabetic to get peripheral neuropathy, when in reality there are hundreds of different causes. But here’s the unfortunate reality. Most doctors you speak to are only aware of four, at best…if that.

Commonly they’ll be aware of diabetes, chemotherapy, genetic disorders like Charcot Marie Tooth Syndrome or autoimmune disorders such as Guillan Barre Syndrome as causes. But there are so many more causes than just these.

For instance, many commonly prescribed medications are HUGE culprits in causing peripheral neuropathy. Medications like statin drugs for lowering cholesterol, high blood pressure medications known as calcium channel blockers, like amlodipine, are huge offending agents. Antibiotics from the fluoroquinolone family (such as Levaquin or levofloxacin, Cipro or Ciprofloxacin) are notorious for causing peripheral neuropathy.

There are also quite a few antidepressants that can cause neuropathy. Now, I could go on and on with medications but list is just too extensive.
Other things that can cause peripheral neuropathy are regular alcohol consumption. Now, I’m not just talking about alcohol abuse. Research has shown that drinking as little as one to two glasses of alcohol daily, and yes-this does include beer and wine, well do this for a year or longer and you can cause significant peripheral nerve damage. Also, conditions like gluten sensitivity, celiac disease, leaky gut syndrome and inflammatory bowel syndromes can cause peripheral neuropathy.

Most people are unaware that malnutrition can lead to peripheral neuropathy. You may not realize that bariatric surgery for weight loss is a large contributing factor to malnutrition and we actually see many cases of peripheral neuropathy develop from people have who have undergone any form of this surgery. There are other surgeries that can also cause peripheral nerve damage leading to neuropathy but that’s typically due to damage to the nerve during surgery. Sometimes it’s a direct damage done directly to the nerve, other times the damage is indirect, meaning it’s been caused by compression or an abnormal stretch to the nerve because the surgeon has left the patient in one positon for far too long of a period. This occurs more frequently than you might realize.

There are certain infections that can cause peripheral nerve damage like shingles, lyme disease and HIV.
