In the UK, specific dog breeds are legally prohibited due to concerns about their aggressive nature and history. The list includes:

Pit Bull Terrier
Japanese Tosa
Dogo Argentino
Fila Brasileiro
Not only is owning these breeds illegal, but activities like selling, abandoning, gifting, or breeding them are also prohibited. The classification of a dog as "banned" is based on its physical characteristics rather than its breed name. For instance, a dog resembling many features of a Pit Bull Terrier might be considered illegal, even if it's not a purebred.

Historically, dog fighting has been a dark shadow, persisting for centuries. Although it's been outlawed in the UK for almost two centuries, underground rings still exist. To combat this, the Dangerous Dogs Act was introduced in 1991, banning four specific breeds.

The Pit Bull Terrier, with origins in England, was initially bred for combat. It participated in brutal blood sports like bull and bear baiting, where dogs were pitted against larger animals. Such activities were outlawed in 1835, but dog fighting continued due to its clandestine nature.

The Japanese Tosa, another banned breed, hails from Asia and was bred for similar blood sports. Unique to its training, the Tosa was conditioned to fight in silence, adhering to Japanese regulations.

Lastly, the Dogo Argentino and Fila Braziliero, both South American breeds, were initially bred for hunting large game. However, upon their introduction to the UK, they quickly gained notoriety in the fighting scene.
