What's REALLY Going On With CVS Closures in Downtown San Francisco?

As if a retreating tide exposing stranded seashells, downtown San Francisco finds itself hemorrhaging essential businesses. The latest casualty? A CVS on 601 Mission Street, scheduled to shut its doors by October 23rd. There's no lack of excuses for why this and other downtown businesses are vanishing; the usual suspects include "local market dynamics" and "lack of foot traffic." But if you're genuinely curious, it's worth pointing out that these closures appear mysteriously tied to their proximity to the Tenderloin district. Ah yes, the Tenderloin, where dreams of clean streets and law and order go to wither and die.

A spokesperson for CVS confirmed the closure, the latest in a string of departures. Once upon a time, the area had six CVS locations; soon, only two will stand. Meanwhile, San Francisco city officials seem more occupied with defunding the police than addressing the obvious elephant in the room: public safety. Or the lack thereof, to be exact. We can discuss "population shifts" and "store density" all we want, but let's not kid ourselves. This area is a ticking time bomb of shoplifting and hazardous street activities, no thanks to the local leadership. But hey, if your idea of a good time is playing whack-a-mole with disappearing businesses, then downtown San Fran is the amusement park for you!
