In this video, I explain how to respond to a keto diet critic. It may be a friend, family member, or doctor who tells you that keto is dangerous.

First, don’t defend yourself or your choices. Instead, ask this simple question: What is your solution to the problem of diabetes and pre-diabetes, which over 50 percent of the population has? (It’s the number one problem in Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and China, for example.)

What is their recommendation for a healthy diet?

Now, the conversation will probably stop right there. But if not, they may say well, the best diet is going to be the one that’s evidence-based. Like something recommended by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Something that’s approved by the American Heart Association (AHA), the American Diabetes Association (ADA), or the American Medical Association (AMA).

But the dietary guidelines from the USDA are 65 percent carbohydrates. So, ask them this next question: Tell me why consuming 200-300 grams per day of carbohydrates is healthy? (This is based on a 2,000 calorie amount of food.)

On keto, I recommend that five percent of your dietary intake be from carbs; this equates to 20 to 50 grams per day.

I’d continue to ask why consuming 200-300 grams per day of carbs is healthy, until you get a suitable answer. But the truth is, it's about the unhealthiest thing you can do. You want the other person to get the key point, which is this huge carbohydrate consumption problem.

And I guarantee that one hundred percent of the time, your critic won’t know what ketone or ketosis is. They may confuse ketosis with ketoacidosis, a dangerous health condition that occurs only if your blood sugar is over 300. This means you have no insulin, you’re a diabetic type 1, and forgot to take your insulin. Your blood sugar is out of control, you have a very acidic pH, and your body is making huge amounts of ketones, leading to your body eating up its own muscle proteins.

Ketoacidosis isn’t the same as taking a healthy person, lowering their carb intake, and getting their body to make more ketones. Ketones are simply the byproduct of fat burning. You’re using them as an alternative fuel that’s more efficient, produces less carbon dioxide, more energy, and more oxygen. Your inflammation will decrease. All due to the keto diet!
