GERD, also called acid reflux or indigestion, can have effects on your joints. I’ll explain.

Your stomach’s three purposes are to help digest protein, absorb minerals, and kill pathogens. I’ll focus on digesting protein. Your stomach needs to be very acidic, with what’s called a low pH. Not only for digestion but for the valve at the top of the stomach to close. Normally you think with GERD that you have too much acid, which is incorrect. But you take an antacid, and it makes things worse. Your stomach becomes too alkaline.

There are numerous common reasons why your stomach loses its acidity: age, medications, low-salt diets, junk foods, and low-potassium foods. So, if you have GERD, it usually means you don’t have enough acid. When you do, you can’t properly digest protein. You’re not going to be able to build strong tendons and ligaments in your joints. You may also have weaker muscles, lose disc height, be deficient in collagen, and even lose protein from your bones.

Here’s what you can do to correct these issues: take apple cider vinegar in water or in a pill, take betaine hydrochloride (or even a combination of the two), and eat large quantities of vegetables to get enough potassium. As well, take sea salt.

If you have inflammation of the stomach, called gastritis, or an ulcer, don’t take apple cider vinegar or betaine hydrochloride. Instead, eat cabbage or wheatgrass juice powder to soothe and heal your stomach. On rare occasions you may need to take a probiotic. I recommend a type called effective microbes.

GERD can cause joint problems, but now you can see how simple it is to fix this condition.
