📌Plot Synopsis:
1. The First Tale (Paul Orman): Charles Boyer plays Paul Orman, a popular actor who gifts the tailcoat to his best friend. However, he later discovers that his lover (Rita Hayworth) is having an affair with his best friend. Heartbroken, he confronts them during a theatrical performance.

2. The Second Tale (D. H. Malneson): In this comedic segment, a down-and-out composer named D. H. Malneson (played by Charles Laughton) is invited to conduct his symphony at the New York Philharmonic. Lacking formal attire, he's gifted the tailcoat. However, the coat is too tight, leading to humorous situations during the performance.

3. The Third Tale (Larry Browne): Larry Browne (played by Edward G. Robinson) plans to propose to his girlfriend (Ethel Waters), but when she rejects him, he decides to end his life. Before he can act on this, he discovers a letter in the tailcoat's pocket that changes his perspective and gives him hope.

4. The Fourth Tale (Edgar): A destitute man named Edgar (played by Jules Garfield) steals the tailcoat from a second-hand shop and finds a wallet in his pocket. While he initially plans to use the money for himself, a twist of fate and an encounter with a homeless community change his mind.

5. The Fifth Tale (Rev. Lazarus): The tailcoat, now tattered and worn, is found by a black farmer named Luke (played by Paul Robeson). Luke intends to gift it to Rev. Lazarus (played by Ethel Waters) for an upcoming jubilee. However, when a plane crashes nearby, the community finds a briefcase full of money, leading to a moral dilemma. They eventually decide to use the money to benefit their community, signifying the message of hope and community spirit.

"Tales of Manhattan" is an exploration of human nature, morality, love, despair, and hope, all tied together by the recurring motif of the tailcoat. The stories range from light-hearted comedy to deeper, more poignant tales, offering a mosaic of life's complexities in the early 1940s.
