A teenager armed with a handgun opened fire at the bustling Siam Paragon Mall in Bangkok's heart, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals. The incident culminated in the apprehension of the young suspect.

The gunfire was reported within the premises of the Siam Paragon Mall, one of Bangkok's premier upscale shopping destinations. Authorities acted swiftly, taking the suspect into custody less than an hour after the initial gunshots were reported.

While major Thai media reports suggest the teen is 14 years old, recently appointed police chief Torsak Sukvimol only confirmed his status as a minor, noting signs of mental illness.

Torsak confirmed that two casualties resulted from the incident, a Chinese visitor and a Myanmar national. Earlier, Bangkok's Erawan Emergency Medical Center Director, Yutthana Sretthanan, had reported three fatalities and six injuries, but later corroborated the police's figure.

The mall, known for its high-end fashion boutiques, luxury car showrooms, cinema, aquarium, and the attached five-star Siam Kempinski Hotel, is now under police control.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin conveyed his condolences, acknowledging the death of a Chinese tourist in his statement.

Gun violence is not uncommon in Thailand, though mass shootings remain infrequent. This incident occurred shortly before the anniversary of Thailand's largest individual mass killing, which transpired in 2022 and claimed the lives of 36 individuals, primarily preschoolers.

In response to the shooting, authorities temporarily closed access to the nearby Siam Square elevated train station during rush hour, and witnesses described scenes of panic as shoppers and commuters sought safety.

Chinese tourist Liu Shiying recounted the chaos, explaining how she and others hid and heard gunshots before the lights in the mall went out.

Gautam Vora, an Indian national present at the mall with his family, described the initial confusion and subsequent stampede, noting the lack of preparedness among mall staff.

Videos on social media captured people fleeing the mall, and some showed the armed suspect within the mall premises. A video of the detained shooter depicted a long-haired boy in a baseball cap, dark shirt, and camouflage pants, with an American flag on his cap. Additionally, images revealed the handgun he was reportedly carrying before being disarmed.

In 2020, another shooting incident occurred at a mall in Nakhon Ratchasima, where a disgruntled soldier killed 29 people and engaged security forces in a 16-hour standoff before being neutralized.
