Eat More Fat podcast

Fiber is fermented in the colon by bacteria...
-converts into short chain fatty acids [SCFA]
-SCFA feed colon lining
Some say: if don't eat fiber, won't make butyrate [SCFA]
'this will destroy lining of gut'

Returning to study of Low Carb vs High Carb...
Low carb: butyrate dropped 18 to 14; Total SCFA 102 to 86
High carb: no change
Bacteria: Low Carb dropped 8 to 6; High carb: no change

Problem eating too much protein?
-remember: stomach acid important to break down protein
-If this is issue for you [old, taking PPIs, have reflux problems]
-should cook protein well; don't let whole proteins into colon
-bacteria ferment it; create cytotoxins & carcinogens
-ammonia
-BCFAs
-phenols
"Careful of rare
meats when
older!"

Study results: BOTH GROUPS: NO CHANGE IN BCFAs!
-no increase in URINE PHENOL or P-CREOSOL
"No increase in deleterious protein fermentation products"
-energy intake was restricted--may have enhanced functionality
of small intestine
to handle proteins

Dr Ali: "Due to high
protein in diet, they
did not over eat as
usual!"
