Mayor London Breed BRINGS BACK Historic Program for Policing: A Good Idea?

It's no secret that San Francisco has been grappling with rising crime rates and a staggering police shortage. In a noteworthy move, Mayor London Breed is dusting off a nearly forgotten 1942 program, the San Francisco Police Department Reserve Police Officer Program, to address these pressing issues. It's an intriguing strategy, trying to solve modern problems with old solutions. Will it work? Well, it's a start, and certainly more action than we've seen from her predecessors. But when your city is down by 600 officers, throwing in 30 reserves feels a bit like trying to put out a forest fire with a squirt gun. The program aims to station 30 reserve officers across the city for high-profile foot-beat assignments, a measure which, while limited, could still bring a renewed sense of security to local businesses and residents. At the very least, it's a breath of fresh air for those tired of the city's decline.

Three years ago, this proposal would have been politically unthinkable, even socially egregious. You remember when "defund the police" was the fashionable rallying cry? Now cities like San Francisco are backpedaling, realizing that taking police off the streets made no one safer and business owners are demanding real solutions. Mayor Breed's throwback program is a curious experiment, a step away from an era when even uttering the phrase "more police" would have had you run out of town. We'll see if this historical playbook can deliver.
