Although we won’t get a new Disney/Marvel Studios movie until the end of July next year with Deadpool 3, we will get Sony/Marvel’s Madame Web. The latter movie, which opens February 14, 2024, further expands the dark Spidey universe that Sony has minted with Venom and last year’s Morbius.
The movie starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney dropped its first trailer Wednesday. A ton of 2024 theatrical tentpoles may have moved their dates, but not this one.
The SJ Clarkson-directed movie follows the Fifty Shades of Grey star Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures … if they can all survive a deadly present.
In the trailer we see Webb survive a drowning experience after which she starts getting visions. There’s also a bad Spidey guy: Ezekiel Sims, played by Tahar Rahim. “He was in the Amazon with my Mom when she was researching spiders right before she died,” Cassandra says.
Coincidence?
One thing is clear and that’s Madame Web is as strong as Peter Parker’s Spider-Man. The White Lotus star Sweeney plays Julia Carpenter, who will ultimately become Spider-Woman according to Marvel in the comics.
Clarkson co-wrote the screenplay with Claire Parker off a story by Karem Sanga. Lorenzo di Bonaventura produces. EPs are Adam Merims and Parker.
Also starring are Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts and Adam Scott.
Madame Web opens on the same weekend as Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love and an untitled Universal event film.
Late last night, Universal reported more delays on the theatrical release calendar with The Fall Guy taking over the start-of-summer first May weekend slot of 2024, left bare by Deadpool 3 after its move to July 26.
The Fall Guy was previously set for March 1, and now there aren’t any wide releases on that weekend.
