Phoenix Police Officer Involved Shooting

November 20, 2023 - Phoenix AZ - Phoenix Police Department says an armed man was shot by one of its officers after firing his weapon multiple times toward an officer Monday morning.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. when an officer was driving along Thomas Road near Interstate 17. Police say a man crossed the street on a bicycle and was nearly hit by the officer.

At that point, the officer tried to make contact with the man and a struggle began. The man was reportedly armed with a handgun in his waistband, and he broke free from the officer and ran away.

Police say the man fired multiple gunshots in the officer's direction, but none of those shots struck the officer.

The man ran to a nearby neighborhood and was later contacted by multiple other officers in an alleyway. He refused to comply and reportedly grabbed for his weapon. At that time, one officer shot at the man, hitting him at least one time.

Officials say the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. No officers were injured during the incident.

Police provided an update on November 29 stating that 24-year-old Jesse Magana was released from the hospital and booked on charges including aggravated assault and misconduct involving weapons by a prohibited possessor.
