At the end of 2022, there were 245,000 people waiting for NHS hospital care in the North East. By October, that had risen past 261,000. But this doesn't tell the full story of a year which has seen ceaseless pressure on scant resources.

The year began with nurses and ambulance workers taking to the picket lines, and mid-way through the spring they were joined by junior doctors and physios. Later in the year, consultants joined them.
