An extremely rare 'dancing lemur' was recently born in the UK.
The baby, a Coquerel's sifaka lemur, was born at the Chester Zoo in England approximately 3 months ago. Coquerel's sifakas are called 'dancing lemurs' due to the unique way they move.
According to the zoo, their population in the wild has declined by 80% in the last 30 years due to habitat loss, which has led the International Union for Conservation of Nature to list the species as critically endangered.
'We’re hopeful that the work here at the zoo in the UK, as part of the co-ordinated efforts with other European zoos, paired with our efforts in Madagascar to protect the forests, will ensure species like the Coquerel’s sifaka can thrive for generations to come,' said Mike Jordan, director of animals and plants at the zoo, in a press release.
