Democracy is in danger from the state failures, and weak institutions created as direct result of the extent to which the political classes perpetrate state capture for their own corruptly criminal actions. That is what we are exploring in this delivery focused on democratic woes and risks in two examples - the USA, and South Africa.

The world’s election calendar is filled to the brim this year. Both of the cases explored here, the USA, and South Africa, have more than mere symbolic significance. The USA, always branded as the world’s best, or such democracy - a model to be emulated by other nations, is evidently struggling to keep the lid on the genie of election rigging that popped out in the 2020 election. South Africa, heralded as a miracle in 1994, and treated as textbook example of how to transition from an authoritarian- to democratic dispensation through negotiation and compromise, has seen its state coffers plundered, and economy brought to its knees via collapsing infrastructure. In the latter case we look at the implosion of the African National Criminal Party.
